Welcome race fans to the 4th annual DHL Saloon Speedweek. Sixteen saloon competitors will race seven consecutive nights at seven different tracks, the only event of its type in
Australasia.
The format for each nights racing will see two heats reverse marble, followed by two dashes and then the feature race. Competitors finishing 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th and 15th in points after the two heats will line up in dash one with the top four inverted, this puts the highest point scorer off grid four. How they cross the finishing line will be the inside starting row for the feature race. Dash two will be the cars finishing 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th and 16th after two heats and the top four inverted putting the second highest points scorer off grid four, how they cross the line is the starting line up for the outside row of the feature. The dashes have provided some outstanding drives in the past as competitors try to get as high up as they can for the all important feature race. With $500 up for grabs for the winner each night in the feature your starting position is important. Over the seven nights competitors get points in every race and the driver with the highest total points over the seven nights will be crowned DHL Saloon Speedweek Champion. With over twenty five thousand dollars at stake over the week it is all-important to finish every race and make it on to the next night. This is where a good crew comes in. This years event includes competitors from the South Island, Eastern States Dave McCallion 26E has made an immediate impact on the Saloon class taking 2NZ at the recent New Zealand Saloon Championship. Dave is a former South Island Super Saloon Champion and this is his first season competing in the Saloons. Dunedin's Mark Newall 96D recently finished equal second in the Interislander Saloon Series and is currently enjoying a very successful season. Also from Dunedin is Tony Williamson 94D who was very consistent during the Interislander series and took out the recent Otago Champs for A grades Saloons. Mark and Tony drive A grade saloons, which are a mix between saloons and super saloons. It's great to se the southerners make the trip up and shows the popularity of the event. Two time defending Champion and series organiser Steve Williams 21H from Huntly will once again continue the brilliant on track rivalry with Auckland registered 48A Phil Towgood. These two drivers received a standing ovation after the feature race at both Woodford Glen and Eastern States during the North/South series after racing side by side for many laps. Joining Williams from Huntly will be fellow Ford racer Bryce Louden 10H and Nige Mouat 63H. Auckland has a strong presence this year, joining Towgood will be Steve Louden 9A brother of Bryce, Steve was 3rd overall last year in his debut. Bryan Skelton 59A, Scott Landsdowne 74A and making his debut Nigel Ross 46A. The lone entrant from Bay Park is popular driver Paul Cressey 45M who is part of a three-car team racing at the Mount. Stratford's Ash Cook 4S will represent the Naki, Ross Creswell 77K is one of four Ford drivers entered, the Kihikihi registered driver is one of Saloons most travelled competitors. Hawkes Bay entrant Steve Martin 92B makes his debut and will be tutored by his Father Graham a veteran of Saloon and Super Saloon racing. Last but not least is Mel Hills 112R racing the 2nd Caddyshack racing Ford Mustang, Mel is crew chief for Caddyshack Racing and when time allows the popular driver gets behind the wheel. Without question this years line up is the strongest yet and to keep up with the action you can get all the latest results and points here on this website.
